January is Glaucoma Awareness Month!

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that gradually steals sight without warning. Did you know currently more than 3 million people in the United States have glaucoma, according to the Glaucoma Research Foundation. By 2030, the National Eye Institute projects to reach 4.2 million, roughly a 58% increase. Out of the 3 million Americans, half of them don’t know they have glaucoma! Because of this, bringing awareness to glaucoma is so important.

Making sure you and your family have regular routine eye exams, to monitor the health of your eye, should never be neglected. Also, discuss with your family members if they or anyone in the family has had glaucoma. The most common kind of glaucoma is open-angle and is hereditary. Knowing your family may help you catch glaucoma early on and this can make a huge difference.

Lastly, for glaucoma research, we must get involved! Getting yourself involved whether it be through donations or spreading the word, will greatly help the Glaucoma Research Foundation in finding a cure!
